Education is one of the most powerful tools for change. In 2024, one of our biggest dreams came true: together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), we co-created Story of a T-Shirt — a children’s activity book that opens young minds to the world of responsible fashion. Published in eight languages and distributed across 143 countries, Story of a T-Shirt is a free global resource inspiring the next generation to value the clothes they wear as deeply as the food they eat. Download the book here.
Why This Book Matters
Since WRÅD was founded, we’ve been challenging the status quo of the sustainability discourse, which is often limited to English-speaking audiences and therefore inaccessible to many schools and communities worldwide. In 2020, we attempted to crowdfund a project to translate educational materials into multiple languages, but it didn’t succeed. That dream was temporarily shelved, until now. Thanks to FAO, Story of a T-Shirt is finally available for free in Arabic, Chinese, Russian, French, Spanish, English, and Italian, reaching children worldwide and helping teachers spark new conversations about fashion’s impact on people and the planet. Because knowledge should never be limited by language.
The Story of Celestina
The book is about Celestina, a very special T-shirt who wakes up in a landfill after being discarded for a tiny hole in her fabric. Determined to find her way home, Celestina retraces her journey step by step, guiding children through every stage of the fashion supply chain from cotton fields and sheep pastures to factories to factories and shops, uncovering the natural resources and human effort required to produce the clothes we wear. Her story helps children see value where others see waste, to think critically about where their clothes come from, and why caring for them matters.

From Pages to Real-World Action
Story of a T-Shirt is designed for children aged four and up, blending playful activities with meaningful lessons to spark curiosity and action. In 2024, we took the story beyond the page — launching a series of upcycling workshops for children aged 4–8, where they explored creative ways to reuse old clothes and experienced, first-hand, the power of circularity and resourcefulness.

A Global Step Forward
Story of a T-Shirt is more than a book — it’s the realization of a vision we’ve held since the beginning of WRÅD: to make sustainability education accessible to everyone, everywhere. By inspiring young minds to rethink fashion today, we’re planting the seeds for a more responsible and equitable fashion industry tomorrow.
